What Your Dog’s Gum Color Says About Their Health

Your dog’s gums might not be something you check every day, but they can actually tell you a lot about what’s going on inside your pup’s body. At Partners Veterinary Hospital Fruitville, we often say the gums are like a window into your dog’s overall health—and learning what’s normal (and what’s not) can help you catch health issues early.
Healthy Gums: What to Look For
Healthy dog gums should be:
- Pink (like bubble gum)
- Moist and smooth
- Quick to “pink back up” when gently pressed
That last one is called capillary refill time—and it’s a great way to check your dog’s circulation. Press a finger lightly on their gum and release. The spot should turn pale and return to pink within 1–2 seconds.
Gum Colors That Could Mean Trouble
If your dog’s gum color looks off, it’s worth paying attention. Here’s what different gum colors can indicate:
- Pale or white gums: Could signal blood loss, shock, or anemia
- Blue or purple gums: May point to low oxygen levels or respiratory distress
- Bright red gums: Could be a sign of heatstroke, inflammation, or infection
- Yellow gums: Might indicate liver disease or a blood disorder
If you notice any of these changes, especially along with symptoms like lethargy, heavy breathing, or collapse, call us right away.
Don’t Forget About Gum Health, Too
Besides color, swollen, bleeding, or foul-smelling gums are signs of dental disease—which is common in dogs and can lead to more serious problems if left untreated. Regular dental cleanings and home care can help keep their mouth (and body) healthy.
When in Doubt, Let Us Check It Out
