Hurricane Season Prep: How to Keep Your Pets Safe in an Emergency

Living in Florida means being familiar with hurricane season—and while many of us know how to prepare our homes and families, it’s just as important to include our pets in those plans. At Partners Veterinary Hospital Fruitville, we want to make sure your pets stay safe, calm, and cared for in the event of a storm or evacuation.
Why Preparation Matters
Storms can move quickly, and evacuation orders may come with little notice. Having a plan (and a pet emergency kit) ready to go can make all the difference when time is limited and stress is high. Preparing now ensures that your pets will have everything they need—no matter what the weather brings.
Create a Pet “Go Bag”
Pack a dedicated bag or container for your pet that’s easy to grab if you need to leave in a hurry. Include:
- Food and water for at least 3–5 days
- Collapsible bowls
- Medications and supplements, with clearly labeled instructions
- A copy of veterinary records (including vaccine history and prescriptions)
- A recent photo of your pet, in case you get separated
- Microchip and ID tag info
- Leash, harness, and crate/carrier
- Waste bags, litter, and disposable trays (for cats)
- Comfort items, like a favorite toy or blanket
- Towels and cleaning supplies for accidents or wet fur
Keep Veterinary Info Handy
Make sure your pet’s medical records are updated and stored in a waterproof pouch or digitally on your phone. This is especially helpful if you need to board your pet or visit a different veterinarian while evacuated.
Not sure what to include? Give us a call—we can provide printed vaccine records, refill medications, and help you double-check your emergency kit.
Know Where You’ll Go
Not all shelters accept pets, so it’s important to plan ahead. Research:
- Pet-friendly hotels or motels outside of evacuation zones
- Boarding facilities that offer emergency accommodations
- Friends or family members who are willing to host you and your pet
During the Storm
- Keep your pet indoors, away from windows and loud noises
- Create a quiet, safe space where they can feel secure
- Use collars and microchips to help ensure they’re identifiable if separated
- Try to stick to their routine as much as possible to reduce anxiety
